Young Disciples: The Good, the Better and the Best.

With Jason and Rachel Gardner

Tuesday 23rd February 2010

The Church appears to be undergoing a complete overhaul in its approach to disciple making. Whether in response to numerical decline or lack of cultural relevance, Christianity in the west is asking serious questions of its ability to create both whole life and life long followers of Christ.

The problem has been highlighted by recent reports of young people leaving the church in their thousands when they hit their twenties: a church may have a thriving youth work but this doesn't necessarily ensure that individuals stay with their faith in the long term.

One of the ways in which we can begin to address this is by asking questions of our goals regarding discipleship. What does 'good' look like when it comes to nurturing a vibrant and mature faith within the young?

The interactive sessions will look at differing ideas of what a 'model' disciple looks like within the gospels as well as using contemporary pointers to plotting the journey toward spiritual maturity. We'll also be looking at the wider Biblical picture to see how the discipling relationship fits into God's ongoing plan for universal redemption.

The day will begin with pastries, coffees and juice at 9.45am so do join us then. The teaching sessions will begin at 10.30am and we'll be letting you go at 1.30pm but, if you're able, we'd love you to grab your own lunch and stay on and chat to the speaker and the LICC team. The space will be available until 2.30pm.

Jason Gardner is lecturer in Youth Discipleship at the LICC as well as being a volunteer youth worker for and trustee of Ignite, a missional youth project in North West London.
Rachel Gardner is co-founder and creative director of Romance Academy, a relationships-positive project that builds young people's self esteem through exploring issues connected to sexuality.

Young Disciples: a series of training and teaching half days designed to equip Churches to face the unique challenges of disciple making in the 21st century.

21st Century Disciples

With Bishop Graham Cray

Saturday 27th February 2010

- What does it mean to be a disciple in Scotland today?
- What are the challenges of living a mission impelled life?
- How do we respond as individuals and as a church?

This is a one day conference for Christians and church leaders to explore together this crucial challenge of discipleship in today's world. In a contemporary culture that is often experienced as 'overwhelming' and challenging, Christians and non-Christians wrestle with the question 'how then shall we live?'

How might this question open our eyes to the missionary opportunity of a life lived well with God on the 'frontline of our engagement with the world? What's the challenge to both Christians and churches and what might be some ways forward for both mission and maturity as 'whole-life' followers of Christ today?

Youth, Culture and Mission Lectures: Gender

With Andy Burns

Thursday 18th March 2010

On the 18th March, in partnership with Winchester Diocese, East2West and Sophia Network, LICC hosts the Youth, Culture and Mission Lectures.

This year's topic: Gender

Following on from the inaugural Youth, Culture and Mission Lectures in March 2009, when Bishop Paul Butler, Nick Shepherd and Jenny Baker explored the theme of youth ministry expressed through the trinity The Youth Culture and Mission Lectures are addressing, tackling and encouraging debate on the provocative topic of The Role of Gender in Youth Ministry

Hosted by Andy Burns of east to west and with high calibre lecturers including Dr Elaine Storkey and Dr Kristin Aune; the two identical days in London and Leeds will look at a theological perspective on gender and reflect on current research into the roles of men and women with a third lecture slot delivered by Lois Gallagher and James Hawes, two excellent practitioners exploring the different needs of young men and young women and the impact that must have on the way we work.

The Youth Culture and Mission Lectures are a response to the increasing numbers of youth workers studying youth ministry and theology at undergraduate or postgraduate and the desire by so many to keep their heads in that field once they have graduated. Pete Maidment, Diocesan Youth Officer for The Diocese of Winchester and one of the founders of the lectures, says; 'The lectures provide an opportunity for people to pursue a deeper, theological and grounded understanding of youth, culture and mission, accessible to those who have already begun to explore the academic bedrocks of youth ministry as well as those who haven't had the time to study and who are eager to take their thinking deeper.'
