Long hours?
Tight deadlines? Stress? Pressure?
A boss who doesn’t understand?
Can work really be part of God's plan?
Where do you spend most of your time? For most of us the answer is the workplace. Many of us spend over 70% of our waking hours working.
Does our work matter? For Christians work has often seemed to take second place to Church. What I do at church is what matters, what I do the rest of the time is unimportant. Is this how God sees the situation?
The last decade has seen the church take a rising interest in the workplace. The divide constructed between the secular and sacred is being challenged and broken down. There is a growing recognition that work is important to God. Central to the character of God is his creative nature, so that to work, or to create, is intrinsic to our very identity as God ’s children.
Immediately questions are raised. Is all work really work? Is it what God intended work to be? Does every job fulfil the intrinsic creative aspects of our nature? As Christians how should we ensure that our work is good work, that the work of those we manage or employ is good work? If our working life is important to God then are we honouring him in that sphere? Are the values we manage our working lives by godly values?
Alongside the challenge to understand work has come a new interest in the role of the workplace as a place of witness. Many see the workplace as the mission field for the 21st Century.
In this six-part small group resource London School of Theology (formerly London Bible College) draws together a host of experts to bring in-depth teaching and biblical wisdom to bear on everyday issues we face wherever we work — in the office, at the checkout, in the classroom, under the car or in the home.
The first resource in the London School of Theology's "Christian Life &..." series, Christian Life & Work helps you discover the everyday opportunities for ministry, witness and spiritual growth in your workplace.
