Wearing Christ on my chest - Christian t-shirts discussion.

Hi. I'm studying for an MA, and am writing an essay on the use of Christian logos and icons on t-shirts in the secular world. If anyone has any info on the topic, or would like to discuss the subject, please feel free to respond.

hi
sounds like interesting essay. I did an essay a couple of years back on Grace's branding if that is of interest (www.freshworship.org). I also run a small t-shirt business selling left-field t-shirts - aim of which is to initially make clergy look a bit less boring. Hence - my current line is a t-shirt with 'vicaress' on the front for female priests, and one with 'canon' on the front with a picture of a canon - for canons. They seem to get a welcome response from wearers and observers so far. If yoy want to email me (or even buy a t-shirt!) you can on moyaratnayake@yahoo.co.uk

Hi John. I can't help you with examples, myself. But I wonder whether you could help us? What have you uncovered so far? How are Christian symbols being appropriated within the secular world of t-shirts?! It sounds fascinating - but it would be great to hear a bit more about what you're discovering. Do respond if you have a moment.

I presume you've seen by now the t-shirt by Teenage Millionaire, with a very limp looking Jesus on the front, emblazoned with the words 'Jesus is my homeboy'...

Here's a link.

i've seen that! How stupid is that? When i saw it with a friend of mine, we werent sure about it. I mean, if i wore it, its because i can proudly say 'Jesus is My Best friend!' But if a non Christian Wore it, what are they sayin? Are they supporting Christ?

Hey have you noticed that the Vicor of Dibley wears one ALL THE TIME?

ok have you ever considered that its a great witness to actually be able to discuss to your non secular mates the whole issue of christian belief by them wearing a jesus is my homeboy? I am very aware of the whole oh no blasphemous lable but come on......... you know your get more attention and respect as a christian i have found if your wearing one for the right reasons... like yeah Jesus is my best mate that is why i wear it...... well it works for me and my mates are all goths, punks and some think there Lords of the underworld lol.... anyway just a passing thought.

Probably I Should be past all this being 64 next birthday. On the subject of any Christian witness I have to say the life has to speak as well as the tea shirt. I used to have a sign on my car which said You Need Christ. Only years later to reflect that my driving may have caused people to say "You're the one who needs Christ mate"!

Maybe it's just me, but I find most of the 'Christian' t-shirts to be a bit lame.

I am not embarassed about Jesus, but I don't think I could wear one of those, I'd almost be more inclined to wear one of the 'secular' t shirts (with religious stuff), although they do come across in a bit of a mocking way most of the time.

What would be interesting, is to talk to one of the designers of a secular t-shirt (like the 'Jesus is my Homeboy' one), and find out what attitudes were behind it.
I'm not sure either

I totally agree - and I think that if you're making Christian t-shirts you should try something a little different. Something that people won't feel stupid wearing and that is 'cool' - try a fitted pale pink tee with a diamanté cross on the front, and little crosses around the hems... Well, just an idea!

I think it looks cool, but thats my opinion.
I love the idea of the diamante cross tee! especially in pink....! My one is brown and has the vintage look! I don't feel stupid wearing it!

I agree totally, if a t shirt that your happy wearing makes a statement and sparks conversation with maybe some one who's raeding it then that cant be bad.i had a sticker on my old van that said - dont laugh Jesus road on a donkey - i had some great chats with people as a result.
Jesus is my home boy however for me personnally borders on irreverence(not wanting to sound prude)

If the shirts are "embarassing" and make people feel stupid, then people wouldnt be wearing them! If you dont like the shirt, then dont wear it! no ones making you! I think the shirts are awesome and a great way to let people know that your a christian.
totally agree with you

I have many Chrstian t-shirts ... I don't feel embarassed and I love to wear them. They are actually taking over my closet, lol. I feel they are a way of expressing Jesus and my faith to those I do not speak to every day ... I am a huge fan of them. My FCA leader has one that says "Friends don't let Friends go to Hell." It's bright yellow and boy does it get ppls attention. I love it!

My son is a Christian in a very secular Jr. High and he almost exclusively wears Christian T-Shirts. He says it's his way of making a statement without having to say anything. Everyone knows where he stands and although he's not the most popular kid, he has the respect of many at his school.

As a Christian would I buy thier t-shirts?

Not a chance! their message is confused. Some of their copy is strong but it is then contradicted by 'dark' imagery. Why is their depiction of an angel carrying two guns?

Their words carry one message and their imagery another

If they were to execute their supporting imagery with more sensitivity, they may achieve a more coherent overall message. At the moment they are coming across as very angry individuals. This does not bode well with the peace love and joy aspect of Christianity.

What do you think?

Posted by  Anonymous on Sun, 10/04/2005 - 5:56pm.
Yes we are angry.
“Christian Bandits” welcome comments from people even the negative ones. We didn’t set up our website to be popular but to help get the message out. If you want bling there is plenty of it out there. We love bling, snazzy, clever, colourful, serious and trendy. In fact anything that makes people talk about Jesus. “Christian Bandits” want to use images that will make people think. One of my favourite lines in a movie is “did an angel ever come to earth without his wings being dipped in blood?” of course angels don’t have wings nor do they carry guns but they move faster than light and hold greater destruction in there hands than a hand gun. The man of sin will not have a bar-code stamped on his forehead and a credit card will not take you to hell. Just images to make people think. Why are we angry? We are angry that young women choose abortion rather than holding a new born baby. We are angry that millions are hooked on drugs and alcohol. We are angry that family life is disintegrating at an alarming rate. We are angry that suicide bombers believe there is no other way. How long should I go on? Beheadings of good men, child pornography, domestic violence, gratuitous sex on television, church leaders that don’t believe the word of God, sickness, disease, poverty. The list is endless. Only God can change all this and we want to be part of this work. We want to be light and salt in a dark world and bring a challenge to the normal thinking of what a Christian!!! T-shirt should look like. We have so much to be happy about and we do thank God for all the wonderful things he has done in our lives but we are in enemy territory and are on a rescue mission. We would appreciate your prayers rather than a put-down.
Indeed, you seem angry!
Posted by  V.Nessa on Tue, 12/04/2005 - 3:48pm.
I must say; you did take that rather badly. You said you accepted negative feedback, I did not regard my comment as negative rather intended it to be constructive. All of your points and observations about this crazy world are valid and truly irritate and frustrate me also.

My point is simply this, your message is strong and accurate but I feel that your execution carries a different message. I am not saying don’t be angry about the state of the world and the evil it contains, I am not saying do not stand up and be a warrior for Christ. I am simply saying to quote: 'Do not let your good be evil spoken of'. Ask people what they think and see if your message is being received the way in which you intended it.

Take Care & God Bless

Phew, it’s good to know that we stand on the same ground even if ours huffs and puffs sometimes. Thank you for your comments, I’m sure there are more people out there who think the way you do and we will try to listen with good grace. We can’t send you a freeby t-shirt then?!!!
P.S anyone out there who would like to design their own badges, we will be willing to make one or more for you at the regular price. Send your ideas through our website or to Christian Bandits, P.O. Box 1006, Preston PR1 0WW

I would love one of those ...look busy!" ones (the "look busy" bit needs to be in quite small print).
At 2003 Greenbelt I got a super black t-shirt with a white pictogram of the upright open palm of a hand, with a black circle piercing the middle of the white palm, and the word "love." above it - explaining it to people is fun (as is wearing it to church where most people are a bit dressed up, specially of course at Easter...) it was a strange little stall with a few items and a couple of rather cool Californian chaps who said they were linked to Delirious? distributors, it may have been fiercedistribution.com but I couldn't see the stuff on their website just now
And the strange little stall wasn't there at Greenbelt 2004.
Two other T-shirts I would definitely buy - if someone made them - would say
"Why Pray - when you can Worry?"
and
"WWJB - Who Would Jesus Bomb?"
They would be irresistible, I would buy them for my (mostly grown-up)
children too.

They were selling 'Who Would Jesus Bomb?' t-shirts at Greenbelt this year, I'm sure. Weren't they?

I don't know if you saw the link I put to this week's CWC, but Teenage Millionaire are selling 'Jesus Walks with Me' t-shirts designed with Kanye West. They're quite cool - although I'm still a bit uncomfortable about the commodification of these things into fashion items. Especially when they're £28 plus £4 p&p!

Maybe someone should design one saying 'What would Jesus Wear'? Now there's an idea...

Hey any time I'm ready to talk about design, logos t-shirts etc. I run a Christian web design network http://www.niphal.com/ and I also have a bunch of shirts (Christian shirts) at http://www.theishclothing.com/ which is intended to be good where there are so many crap crap crap designs. Really it is sad. Two designs, "non practicing atheist" and "the storm is coming" are my first two.

Anyway I'm available to contact from either of those sites in the contact forms on the pages or email me "ants" at those domains.

me and some friends i have worked with have made "Jesus" t-shirts. actually, a friend of mine and i made some a couple weeks ago. mine said, "Jesus is my Wild Romancer" and my friends said, "Jesus loves me, why can't you, baby?". i actually think they're fun. i also have seen one by Teenage Millionaire in Gadzooks that's just a sun with the phrase, "Jesus loves me" in the middle. i actually plan on purchasing that one. i LOVE glorifying God with what i wear, but honestly with a lot of the ones made (for ex., the ones they sell in Lifeway) just aren't with the trends. i remember shirts like that being made when i was 9 - and i'm almost 24! i dunno. just my thoughts. anyway, i think one of the best ways to see what you want on other people is to start it yourself. try making one and see how people respond. it's kinda cool!

Your shirts are ok,
but they need to be not so afraid to talk about Jesus,

The meaning is so small and hidden,
its like they are afraid to be bold about Christ.

Its far better not to be so vague.
