Engaging with the Bible

Putting promise before pressure

Nearly three out of every four people in the UK identify themselves as Christian, yet the UK workplace seems decidedly 'un-Christian' and distinctly secular. How many of us will be celebrating 'festive season' soon? And how many of us have had second thoughts about wearing a cross at work in the wake of Nadia Eweida's suspension by British Airways and the debate over Fiona Bruce's necklace? Of course, Christians have long faced tough choices about how they express their faith at work but these recent cases are indicators of a more legalistic and inhibiting environment. How are we to navigate our way through the rapids?

In the Genesis passage, Abram's relationship with Lot is unravelling, and eventually conflict erupts between their herdsmen. Their reactions offer us contrasting approaches to tough choices.

On the one hand, Lot seems to walk by sight, not by faith. The passage goes on to describe how he sees the well-watered land, and puts his own interests first, rather than his uncle's. His choice is governed by short-term benefits with lesser consideration for those around him or for the potential moral compromise associated with residing near Sodom.

Abram, in contrast, decides to forego his right to choose. He trusts in God's promise of a land for him and his descendants, and His ability to fulfil that promise. He keeps his eyes on the goal set before him - God's call shaped his life and his choices.

So how can we counter the prevailing culture and actually make a difference?

First, Abraham's life encourages us to feed our minds on God's promises. Like him, we can allow our faith to be strengthened by remembering God's faithfulness in the past and the promise of provision for the future. Second, when tempted to keep quiet about our faith for short-term benefits, we can remember that God has given us a distinctive call. We are to make disciples of Jesus, even in the workplace. Our call gives 'work' an overarching purpose.

Let Abraham's example help us stand firm against the tides of opposition so that we shine His light in our workplaces.
