I Love My Work

David Shadbolt reviews I Love My Work by Robin Scurlock and Steve Goss.

Before even starting to read this book, I reckoned I was in for a good time. The title itself drew me into each of the six bible studies like a moth to a light. If you have understood the fact that God is deeply interested in your work, and you are to bring him into every aspect of your working life, then you will certainly benefit. The style is friendly and approachable, translating deep theological truths into words and concepts that are readily understandable. Essentially, the book is structured around Bible studies, designed to be easily adapted to a variety of contexts: as presentation themes in workshop style; as small group study material; as a special series of services to highlight the role of work; for private study or even for the training of ministers and church leaders. Of course, in the bold attempt to cater for all these groups of people across six topics in just 114 pages, Robin and Steve have only been able to scratch the surface. Certainly, there is solid biblical teaching, excellent questions to ask yourself and others at the end of each chapter, but there is not a great deal of material on how I apply it. It tells me what I should become and why I should want to, but I think I would need more help from other workplace ministry sources to know how to get there. Naturally, that can be easily catered for in group study and interactive workshops. As a starting place to help people understand God's view of work, and as a resource for those who are trying to help others see it too, it is tremendous. For those who have already ploughed through several books and courses on this subject, they may well be left thinking, "I love it, but I've heard it before."

I Love My Work is published by Terra Nova, £6.99
