Apprentice 09: The Leader
203 leaders in full-time paid ministry contributed to the Apprentice 09 survey. Their responses reveal much about the challenges and costs facing people in ministry today.
Leaders at Work
The chart below compares the issues that leaders have faced in the last 12 months compared to the average.

In six areas leaders are struggling more with issues than the average. In particular, leaders are displaying significantly higher levels of struggle with long hours (57% to 28%) and stress (47% to 41%). In addition, leaders are experiencing greater levels of conflict (35% to 20%). Significantly, this means that leaders are struggling with a number of issues to a greater extent than many in their congregations.
Leaders at Home
A similar picture emerges of the home life of leaders.
It is clear that leaders are struggling as much, if not more with issues in the home as members in their congregation. In particular a substantial majority of leaders are facing the issue of work-life balance (68% to 47%).
The survey highlights the need to equip leaders for work-life issues and to discover new ways in which leaders can model different ways of being in the home and workplace.
