CommunicationLove at Work by Margaret Killingray (Word for the Week 18-08-08)
Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. 1 Peter 4:8 Brought up in small town and village communities, the New Testament writers knew that humans belonged to each other socially. Even when scattered by unrest and persecution, their sense of belonging was that of traditional rather than modern urban societies. Peter’s letter, like those of Paul, emphasises an added dimension – Christians belonged to each other in the fellowship of the love of God. The phrases ‘each other’ and ‘one another’ occur over and over again in the New Testament and are worth picking out for study. Enduranceby Margaret Killingray (Word for the Week 16-06-2008) Slaves, accept the authority of your masters with all deference, not only those who are kind and gentle but also those who are harsh… For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example… when he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten. The Rise of the Blog
Mark Greene considers how blogging is creating a communication revolution that has profound implications for the church. Reporting on the reporters
In today’s media jungle, Nick Spencer argues that the big beasts of our unfettered press would paradoxically benefit from some old-fashioned restraint and humility. ‘It’s in the public’s interest.’ Celebrating Disciple-Making- Mark Greene's talk at the golden jubilee celebration of the UK Navigators (2005) It was a particular joy for Mark Greene to be invited to talk at the golden jubilee celebration of the UK Navigators in London and Manchester, as he was led to Christ and discipled by people associated with the organisation.Mark examined Jesus' response to the 'harassed and helpless' crowds in Matthew 9, noting that there are two main groups of people who might be described as 'harassed and helpless' in contemporary Britain: people who don't yet know Jesus, and people who do. The Great Divide- the greatest cultural challenge facing the church A couple of months ago I was asked to do a twenty minute presentation on the three greatest cultural challenges facing the Church in the 21st Century. What made it worse was that I had to present my response to the consultative board of a serious US University. Which three challenges should I choose? And whatever I chose, wouldn’t there be a gaggle of geniuses to contradict me? This looked to me like what rugby players used to call a hospital pass – that moment when one of your team-mates gives you the ball a millisecond before three opposition forwards the size of Godzilla and the texture of granite arrive on your ribs. You’re going to get crunched. |
