Title: Relationships
Activity:
Get two friends to volunteer and ask them if they think they know each other well. Then get one to go out of the assembly hall/ room (or use noise protector ear muffs for more impact!) then ask the following questions:
NB remember to remember their answers!
Would you rather take a bath in mouldy custard or marmite?
Would you rather go on a date with Angelina Jolie or Jennifer Aniston/ Brad Pitt or Orlando Bloom?
Would you rather be pretty/handsome but stupid or plain looking but extremely clever?
Now bring the other ‘contestant’ back and ask them how they think their friend answered the questions – make sure the friend can’t mime the answers to them etc.
Talk:
Perhaps it doesn’t matter whether or not people know if you prefer mouldy custard to marmite, but it does matter that people know you well.
For instance it’s sometimes annoying when people forget the basics about you - like your name. Now in today’s world we meet so many people it’s difficult to remember everyone’s name – did you know that we meet more people in the space of a week than the average medieval person (500 years ago) met in a lifetime?
But names are important to us, they carry meaning for instance my name means
(head to www.behindthename.com to find out) and with the help of a website I’ve even been able to find out my Pirate name which is (www.fidius.org/quiz/pirate/) (eg. I came out as Iron Jack Roberts)
But did you know that:
Muhammad means Praiseworthy.
Sunita means good conduct or well behaved.
Amy means beloved
Matthew means gift of God
Now there may be a lot of people in this world with the same name as you, (use web search engine to come up with people who share your Christian and surname and give examples) but there really is only one you, and every one of us is worth getting to know.
For instance it’s important that when you’re buying a friend a birthday present that you know that they prefer Ja Rule to My Chemical Romance.
And if it’s annoying when people forget your name it’s more annoying when people judge you without knowing you:
Tell this story:
In May 2003, Christina Aguilera visited a computer exhibition in Las Vegas. While staring at a PC (and looking completely confused), she was approached by a man who introduced himself and offered to answer any questions she might have. Aguilera naturally assumed he was just another creepy fan trying to chat her up. "Thanks, buddy," she replied, "but I've already got a computer guy who can do that."
Aguilera was later surprised to learn that the ‘nerd’ who approached her was none other than Bill Gates the multi billionaire chief of Microsoft.
Remember these three simple words ‘one fact more’ it’s always worth finding out one more fact about a person before you judge them, because we’re all worth getting to know.

Christian Perspective:
John 8 – woman caught in act of adultery, Jesus refused to judge even though he was without sin and he respected the woman even though he didn’t know her.
Music:
Use as background or intro to talk: Destiny’s Child ‘Say my Name’ - the importance of a name – a boyfriend who’s been unfaithful can’t bring himself to say his girlfriend’s name, for lyrics head to www.lyrics.007.com
Film:
Empire Strikes Back Special edition DVD 44m50s – 46m06s
Judging by appearance: Luke doesn’t expect the Jedi Master he’s looking for to be a small, green annoying gremlin.
