Ruth is a masterpiece. An apparently simple story of radical, self-giving love among ordinary people in a decaying culture, difficult economic times, and agonising personal circumstances – famine, widowhood, barrenness, displacement, migration.

Yet, under the surface, the text brims with allusions, inviting the reader to make connections not only back to the patriarchs and Moses, but forward to Samuel, David and the Psalms.

Many of the characters’ actions resist rapid reduction to teaching points – they are real people, in real times. Rather, we’re invited to engage imaginatively, prayerfully, and patiently in the unfolding drama. We will consider how godly love should find active expression in our own apparently ordinary contexts – work, family, community. And we will wonder at the loving character of the covenant-redeemer God, ever at work in his world and in his people to fulfil his promises and purposes – in Ruth’s time and in ours.

The day will be led by Mark Greene, LICC’s Executive Director. It will involve a combination of input and interaction, exploring Ruth, and honing skills for reading Old Testament narratives in general.

It’s not only for church leaders, preachers and teachers, but for anyone interested in immersing themselves in the text with a desire to allow Lord and Spirit to shape their mind, heart, and hands for fruitful and faithful mission in their daily context.
